Feedback from Mentees

It's a great opportunity and if you take the opportunity with both hands, you will gain a valuable relationship. For me, my mentor provides me with valuable insights, guidance, and our shared background in agriculture allows for relatable discussions and problem-solving.

Furthermore, my mentor serves as a supportive sounding board, helping me to manage my expectations.

I had been looking for a mentor for a couple of years, but it had proven difficult to be selected for a scheme, or to be matched with the right person who understands the agricultural industry. Onboarding onto Twocan was extremely easy with a very welcoming team. Not only have Twocan been able to match me with a brilliant mentor who has the network and reached a level within their career I had hoped to be able to learn from, the program has been invaluable to myself and my mentor. I have learnt a lot about myself; it has opened potential doors for me; built my confidence to reach for opportunities; but also allowed me to look down avenues for self-betterment I had not considered before.

I joined Twocan because I felt stuck/unhappy in my career and wanted to find a mentor that could help me change this situation. I am hoping to identify and redirect my strengths to get a job where I'll be able to shine.

I have found my mentor to be very supportive and able to give me help with direction and help with decisions which I am not very sure of. The mentorship has felt very interactive, with them asking questions of what I really want, checking that things are ok for me, and that I am happy. I feel that they are focused on what's best for me and helping in any way that they can to deliver that.

Being part of Twocan Mentor has already been amazing!

I’ve had two sessions with my mentor Sophie Smith, and already she has pushed me out of my comfort zone and tapped into what is important to me in my business.

If you are on the fence wondering if mentoring is for you, I would say it definitely is! Collaboration, ideas and knowledge transfer is definitely key to personal and business growth.

I look forward to my next session, updating Sophie on my homework!

Having a mentor through Twocan, has given me the ability to make time for myself from a development point of view. Mark has given me the ability to think about things in a different light, in preparation for my new role I'm about to start. I work in the agricultural feed industry, alongside farming with my father in North East Wales.  After hearing about Helen's story, I felt I needed a mentor to help guide me through leaving one company and joining another. Having regular meetings with my mentor, has given me the opportunity to discuss how I would deal with certain scenarios as well having that connection time to allow for reflection on what has been going on in my work life.

Its going really well, I feel that my mentor is highly experienced. For me it has been great- setting goals and working out what to focus on. They are easy to chat with and I feel that I am benefitting a lot from the experience.

I joined the program as it’s a great opportunity to gain an objective view of your development and receive relatable guidance by having a mentor from someone within the sector. I look forward to the supportive mentoring sessions and find them a great opportunity for reflection. The training course at the start of the program is also a great way of learning about the mentoring process and skills you can use for life.

Feedback from Mentors

I thrive from working in areas where I am not the technical expert but where I can harness the knowledge that experts have and use my experience and tried and tested methodologies to find opportunities, solutions and create growth for their business, their teams and the wider industry they serve. I love the energy the Twocan team brings to their projects and I want to be part of that.

You gain somebody you can put trust in and can be open and honest with and so having that person to chat with who's independent to work, friend or family has been valuable.

Having a mentor, gives you that sort of springboard to ask things, you can bounce ideas off.

I think, the more that we can connect people up and help people, whether that's sort of specialist areas or whatever, the better. And I would say that my career has been greatly enhanced by the fact that I've had people who've invested in me, and so there are people that I call sponsors. At very, very important points in my career path. I've had somebody who's, kind of, you know, sat on my shoulder and, helped and guided.

I like helping people and I find it interesting listening to their journeys and seeing where they might be going. I also think if you've been fortunate enough to have good people mentoring and supporting you over the years, it's nice to be able to give that back. It's a great way to expand everyone's network which can only be a good thing for everyone involved.

Today was my fourth session working with an incredibly outgoing and driven mentee. We all have our personal and work bubbles, so we’ve both been loving exposure to a different perspective and part of the industry neither of us had really seen in detail before. 100% recommend considering Twocan Mentor, both as a mentor or mentee, and both for personal or professional mentorship (as the weeks go by, the two seem more and more intertwined).

I’m mentoring with Twocan because supporting people to grow and succeed is something I’ve always cared about. It’s a chance to share what I’ve learned, listen, and help others find their way—and I get a lot out of it too. It’s a really positive experience.

Lewis Clare, an organic farmer on the outskirts of Manchester running a diversified site with a strong emphasis on environmental and educational work. Despite being part of a National Trust estate, the farm has been in the family for 250 years and hosts 25 school trips per year, with an emphasis on inner-city kids. The farm also acts as a small business hub. I decided to join the scheme as I’ve developed my business into a lifestyle one whereby I’m no longer required to work 50 hour weeks. With that time availability, it seemed an opportune moment to give something back and help someone achieve their goals. The focus of the programme should be outcomes for the mentee, but that doesn’t mean the mentor won’t get anything out of it. There’s a pride and satisfaction in knowing that you’re helping someone and imparting your wisdom and experience to them. Mentoring is something that I believe once happened naturally, if more informally, in society, but has been lost in recent decades. It needs replacing, and this programme is delivering it in a modern, 21st century context.

Our industry is crying out for this - (mentoring) it's really useful and really rewarding – it needs to become the norm - as there is so much value in it.

My feeling is that I can't get enough of it.

Everyone should find a mentor!

I have got such a buzz out of doing it and it was nice to bring something to my review from outside the company.

From being part of Twocan mentoring, I have come to realise how desperately mentoring is needed within our industry. We need more people to want to offer their time to new and not so new people as many are struggling with things in the farming sector and it seems you can either go and pay a fortune, which most people don't want to do, so they just sit in their own little hideout. But Twocan mentoring is an affordable option and can have a huge positive impact.

Having an independent mentor when I started out was invaluable to me on many levels. Everyone faces challenges but having someone, completely independent, to bounce things off can help you face them. It can also encourage you to grow and work out what is really important to you, as an individual, as well as for your business. Being able to have the opportunity to be that support for someone else feels a privilege but also being with a group that TwoCan have created helps me feel supported to give the best that I can, and hopefully means we can all support one another. Twocan have created a strong network as well as a great platform for individuals to join, get support and all grow together.

Having not done formal mentoring before starting with Twocan was a little daunting not knowing what to expect. The pre start training was great, bringing techniques and styles together to help in discussions with your mentee. Working with and building a repour with my mentee took place over a number of meetings, mostly in person, to talk about their aspiration, targets and what was important in their future. All in all the mentoring process was a really enjoyable experience.

I joined the Twocan programme for two reasons, firstly I wanted to have the opportunity to provide a level of support/mentorship, I struggled to find as I developed my career. Secondly I wanted to grow my own skills in mentoring and supporting my own team members. The great value of the Twocan programme is it delivers for mentees, it delivers for mentors and it adds value to businesses that support the programme.

Emma Steele

Knowledge Exchange at AHDB

A bit about you

I was brought up on a mixed livestock farm in East Yorkshire. After studying Agriculture at Newcastle University, I moved down to Warwickshire for my first ‘proper job’ at AHDB in the beef & sheep genetics sector. I did that for 3 years before taking a secondment into the Knowledge Exchange team at AHDB, being the point of contact for beef & sheep producers between Lincolnshire and Herefordshire. A year secondment, turned into 2 and then I got invited to stay! I’ve now been in the role 5 years and enjoy the variety my role brings – no two days are the same.

Why did you decide to join the programme?

I love my job and my team, but I was looking for a new challenge when I came across Helen and Twocan Mentor at an industry networking event. Being mentored sounded like a great idea and opportunity to push myself. Having been in the same organisation since I graduated and the same role for a while, you can sometimes become a little sheltered from how other organisations and job roles work. This seemed the perfect opportunity to get an alternative opinion on my career and development from people that have a very different experience to me and don’t really know me, so have no bias.

What do you hope to gain from the experience?

I would love to have some goals and something to aim for, I don’t know where I see myself in 5/10/15 years, so I’m hoping this scheme will help me bring some clarity to that and work out what I do and don’t want from my career. I’d also like some different opinions on how to deal with work challenges – especially when people have different ways of working. I’m a planner who likes a reasonable amount of detail, a fair amount of control and time to think things through, so working with people who don’t work in that way is inevitable, but can be frustrating
